A long recording contains more than one possible output. The useful unit is not a fixed number of seconds. It is an idea that a person can understand without having watched everything that came before it.

01

Mark the argument

Read or review the recording for questions, examples, explanations and conclusions. Mark where each idea begins and where it becomes complete. A strong moment may need an earlier sentence to establish what the speaker is responding to.

Keep the source timestamp with the extract. It makes fact checking, editing and returning to the original context easier.

02

Choose the format for the idea

A visual demonstration may suit a reel. A nuanced explanation may deserve an article. A sequence of decisions may work as a diagram or carousel. Do not force every passage into the same format simply because one template is convenient.

Write the opening for the new context. Someone encountering the clip in a feed has not agreed to watch the full conversation and may not know the subject.

03

Preserve the meaning

Check that the cut does not remove a qualification or turn a hypothetical example into a claim about a real event. Captions and titles should describe what the speaker actually says.

04

Connect the pieces

Give interested viewers a relevant next destination: the full discussion, a worked example or a practical guide. Track which questions the short pieces generate and use them to improve the longer material. Repurposing is valuable when each version serves its audience, not merely when one recording produces a large count of assets.
